Use Valheim's normal DirectX 11 option as your Windows starting point, and keep Vulkan if it already runs reliably. If Valheim crashes or develops graphical faults with Vulkan, compare DirectX 11 before changing several graphics settings. You can make that comparison through Steam's launch arguments, with a clear route back to your original setup.
Check forced launch arguments first
Close Valheim, open your Steam Library, right-click the game and select Properties. Under General, find Launch Options and copy the existing text somewhere safe. Look for -force-vulkan: that argument tells the game to use Vulkan. Changing another graphics setting while leaving this command in place keeps the forced renderer in your next launch.
For a Windows DirectX 11 comparison, remove -force-vulkan and use -force-d3d11 instead. Keep one renderer-forcing argument at a time, leave unrelated options unchanged and launch from the Steam Library. Valheim's Windows requirements list DirectX 11, and these are the rendering arguments supported by its Unity engine. Use the normal Valheim launch choice rather than the separate Vulkan choice when Steam presents them.
Compare the same place after restarting
Restart after changing the argument, then return to the situation that caused trouble. Keep your resolution, graphics quality and frame cap steady. Check whether you can get through the loading screen and repeat the activity that previously failed. For stutter, walk the same route and turn the camera in the same area; a quiet clearing and a busy settlement make poor comparisons.
Keep DirectX 11 if it resolves the problem. To return to Vulkan, close the game, remove -force-d3d11 and restore -force-vulkan, then restart again. If both behave similarly, keep the setup you prefer. Judge crashes, graphical faults and responsiveness alongside frame rate, rather than choosing from a single high FPS reading. These are checks you can perform on your own PC, rather than a benchmark result for a particular GPU.

Check an external limiter if you keep Vulkan
Iron Gate's 19 February 2026 patch 0.221.12 warned about Vulkan instability and suggested disabling external FPS limiters, including those in Nvidia Control Panel. That patch also fixed one specific Windows startup crash. Treat the limiter change as a diagnostic option when you use Vulkan and an external cap, rather than assuming every current crash has the same cause. Leave a reliable setup alone.
On Nvidia, open NVIDIA Control Panel > Manage 3D Settings > Program Settings and select Valheim. Record your existing Max Frame Rate value, set it to Off and apply the change. Relaunch and repeat the same check. Disabling that driver cap lets frame rate rise unless another limit remains active, which can increase power use and fan noise. If the change brings no improvement, restore your recorded value; keep other games' profiles intact.
Update before escalating a remaining crash
Install the current released game update before continuing with an older build. Patch 1.0.21, released on 28 October, includes fixes for rare crashes, mostly in multiplayer. If crashes continue in both renderer configurations, stop cycling between the same two arguments. Record the game version, Windows version, GPU, graphics driver, launch arguments and the action that triggers the failure, then use Report a Bug on Valheim's official support page.
The -force-d3d11 argument is for Windows. Keep Linux, Steam Deck and Mac troubleshooting separate from this Windows comparison. Preserve your world while investigating; changing renderer arguments requires no save deletion. Keep the original launch text and driver cap in your notes so that each comparison is reversible. If a particular area still fails, describe that location and whether you were playing alone or with friends in your report. If your next problem concerns returning to a pre-1.0 world, use our separate Valheim old-world save guidance before starting again or moving your group's established settlement.
