You do not have to abandon an established Valheim world when version 1.0 arrives on 9 September. Iron Gate says old saves remain usable and receive new content. The important limit is map discovery: new biome generation works properly only in terrain that has not already been explored. That makes the practical choice straightforward. Keep a treasured server if its history matters and its far north is still unknown; begin a fresh world if the group wants the most dependable route through Deep North. Before launch, also settle achievements, mods and save-sharing so a return trip does not deliver an avoidable surprise.

01Choose the right world for Deep North

First, decide what the group wants from 1.0. An old world is valid: Iron Gate explicitly says existing saves stay where they were and can continue to be played. It is the sensible option for a server built around a shared settlement, a long-running project or a party that wants to see the new biome without replaying every boss. There is no requirement to delete a world, transfer a character or buy the game again. The update simply arrives as the normal version update for existing owners.

For a Deep North-focused return, treat unexplored territory as the deciding condition. Iron Gate says a pre-update world receives new content, but biome generation works properly only where the map has not been explored. If players have already charted the far north, a new world is the safer choice for the intended terrain. That is why the studio still recommends a full restart for the best experience. Do not read that as a warning that an older settlement will break; it is a caveat about how procedural content is placed after an update.

02Protect achievement eligibility

Achievements start tracking when the 1.0 version is downloaded, rather than crediting progress earned in Early Access. That means an achievement tied to a boss such as Eikthyr requires a new kill after the update, even for a character that beat that boss many times before. Set expectations before choosing an old world: continuing a mature save is fine, but it does not automatically fill the new achievement list. A fresh playthrough may make those milestones easier to organise, while an existing world remains useful for exploration and building.

Keep cheat use and special items separate from an achievement run. Iron Gate says most devcommands, including spawning items, permanently mark the current character and world as cheated; characters that used cheats before 1.0 are also marked. Spawned items are visibly marked, and picking one up can put an otherwise clean character into a temporary cheated state. The FAQ says eligibility can return after that character discards all cheated inventory items, but hammer-mode also blocks achievements while active. Use a clearly non-cheated character and world if achievements are the priority.

03Pause mods and plan cross-platform play

PC players should expect mods to need time after launch. Iron Gate does not provide official mod support and says it cannot guarantee mods will function when 1.0 releases. The cautious route is to wait for each mod's developer to confirm compatibility before enabling it on a returning save; console players should not expect a workaround, because 1.0 has no console mod support or Steam Workshop feature. This is a compatibility warning, not evidence that every mod will fail, so check the mod author rather than trusting an old community installation guide.

Finally, distinguish crossplay from cross-platform save sync. Valheim 1.0 supports crossplay across PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2, so friends on those platforms can play together. Save files do not generally follow the player between ecosystems, however. Iron Gate only confirms Xbox-to-PC access when the PC copy is launched through the Microsoft Store; beyond that route there is no cross-platform save sync. Plan the host and the platform where a world will live before the group begins its new expedition.
