Craft a Minecraft saddlewith leather and an iron ingot

To craft a Saddle in Minecraft, use three Leather and one Iron Ingot at a Crafting Table. Pick up Leather first to unlock the recipe. You can make it in the normal released game; you do not need a saddle mod, a snapshot or a lucky dungeon chest.

This guide covers unmodified Java and Bedrock on PC from the Chase the Skies release: Java 1.21.6 and Bedrock 1.21.90, both released on 17 June 2025. Later releases retain the recipe. Those are the minimum versions for this method, rather than a claim that they are today's latest builds.

Unlock the recipe and arrange the ingredients

Have three pieces of Leather and one Iron Ingot in your inventory, then open a Crafting Table. Mojang's release notes say the recipe unlocks when you pick up your first Leather. If you have been searching the recipe book without ever collecting that ingredient, do that before looking for the Saddle again.

For the arrangement in Mojang's screenshot, put one Leather in the top-centre square. Across the middle row, place Leather on the left, the Iron Ingot in the centre and Leather on the right. Leave the bottom row empty. Use the three-by-three table grid so you have room for that pattern.

Take the Saddle from the output slot and check that it is now in your inventory. That completes the craft. The recipe needs an Iron Ingot, so check the ingredient's name if you have used another iron item. A saddle already found elsewhere is not an ingredient or an unlock requirement.

Check the version if no Saddle appears

Advice saying saddles cannot be crafted describes the older game. If the recipe still produces nothing, check the version running your world against the minimums above, then compare the ingredients and pattern with the screenshot. These checks establish whether you are following the documented vanilla recipe; they do not diagnose every server or modpack change.

Do not follow an old chest-hunting route as though its loot table is unchanged. Chase the Skies replaced Saddles with Leather in Monster Room, Ancient City, Desert Pyramid, Jungle Pyramid and Stronghold altar chests. Finding Leather there can therefore supply this craft, even when the Saddle an older guide promised is absent.

Recover a Saddle without killing the mount

If a mount already has a Saddle you want back, use Shears on it. Mojang confirms that the equipment pops off ready to collect and reuse. Before trying, get every rider off the mob and stop crouching: both editions exclude removal while the mob has a rider or the player is crouching.

Two further restrictions matter if that action does nothing. Shears cannot remove a Ravager's Saddle, and putting Shears in a Dispenser does not automate removing Saddles or other equipped riding gear. For a normal eligible mount, collect the released item and check your inventory before leaving it behind.

A Happy Ghast takes a Harness rather than a Saddle. If that is the creature you are preparing to ride, making another Saddle will not solve the equipment mismatch: the Harness is a separate item. PC Gamer's launch guide also flags this distinction alongside the crafting recipe and shears route.
