If your two-person party in Star Wars: Galactic Racer is searching without starting a new online race, it needs a third human player who is outside your party. The launch FAQ documents this matchmaking requirement. It is separate from the three-person party limit, and AI filling empty grid positions does not replace that outside player.
This guide applies to the 6 October 2026 launch on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, using the publisher's FAQ checked on 7 October. The planned increase to six-person parties is a future update, not the current limit. The checks below explain documented matchmaking behaviour; they are not a confirmed repair for every connection error.
Check the party size before searching
Online parties currently hold up to three players. If four or more friends want to enter together, the launch party system cannot accommodate that group. The publisher says it is aiming to raise the limit to six within the first few weeks after release, but gives no firm installation date in the FAQ. Do not assume that an advertised future capacity is already available.
Party capacity and race capacity measure different things. Quick Race and Multiplayer Tour support up to 12 racers; Quick Podrace and Podracer Tour support up to eight. Those larger grids do not mean you can invite that many people into your party. There is also no split-screen multiplayer, so a second controller on one system is not the documented alternative for bringing another friend into these online events.
Allow matchmaking to find another human
The game first looks for an existing race with vacancies. If none is available, it creates a new Tour or Quick Race when you and another unique player are searching. For a party of two, the FAQ specifically requires a third unique player who is not part of that party. Your friend beside you in the party does not satisfy that separate-player condition.
That makes an apparently empty search worth distinguishing from an error message. Two friends can be ready together while the system is still waiting for someone else. The FAQ gives no maximum waiting time, so there is no documented countdown after which a race must start. It prioritises players in your region, then can match across regions if nobody is available locally.

AI racers fill unoccupied grid positions when there are not enough players to fill a race. This is a grid-filling rule, not permission to start a fresh event with only your two-person party. Keep the outside-human requirement in mind before interpreting the presence of computer opponents as proof that matchmaking should launch immediately.
Wait for the next race in Spectator Mode
Joining a Multiplayer Tour or Podracer Tour can put you into Spectator Mode because the Tour has already begun. That is an expected result of the game's preference for filling existing sessions. Watch for the next race rather than treating a spectator arrival by itself as a failed join. The publisher says late entrants receive adequate resources when that race begins so they are not disadvantaged by arriving later.
TechRadar's PS5 review describes quick races and Tours with crossplay enabled during its review-period multiplayer sessions. That independently establishes the modes in use, but does not measure launch-day queue times. Crossplay is enabled by default according to the official FAQ and can be switched off; the publisher does not supply an exact settings path there. No guessed menu route is needed to explain the party requirement.
Report behaviour outside the documented rules
If you receive an error, cannot enter online play at all, or remain unable to race after joining a Tour, use the Customer Support link in the official FAQ and fill out its bug-report form. Describe whether you were searching as a pair or had already entered Spectator Mode. Those are different stages of the process, and identifying which one failed gives support a clearer account than simply saying multiplayer is broken.
