Pick one footballer, then pass the rest to the next manager. Football Manager 27's Shuffle Draft turns recruitment into a shared-table contest, with everyone choosing at once from sets that move between participants. The pleasure is in the players you take and the possibilities you leave for somebody else.

The new mode is included in the free PC and Mac Launch Preview, now running until 6pm GMT on 3 November. FM27's full release follows on 10 November. Sports Interactive has built Shuffle Draft with FIFAe, giving its management game a competitive format where building the squad is part of the match against your opponents.

The player you leave behind

Before the opening selection, the host chooses the pool. Presets include Wonderkids, Veterans and Lower League Legends, alongside the World's Best. Custom filters cover nationality, reputation and club division. Men's and women's football are both available, in separate events. Those choices give a group a useful way to decide what sort of footballing knowledge it wants to test.

A veterans event puts a different cast on the board from a search for young prospects. You can also build around particular strengths, including leadership or physical qualities, and choose between Mixed, Higher and Highest player quality. Mixed is especially appealing: a pool with conspicuous strengths and weaknesses makes the shape of each team interesting before the tactics screen even opens.

The pool becomes sets of 20 footballers, with one set for each participating team. Every manager picks a player within the host's chosen time limit; once everyone has selected, the sets pass on. Your next decision arrives in a different selection. Meanwhile, the group you just examined is somebody else's opportunity, minus the player you kept.

That passing rule gives an ordinary positional choice a social edge. Taking the player who completes your attack also means letting the rest of that set move on. A draft like this makes restraint interesting: assembling a functioning side asks you to value the gap in your own team alongside the attractive names still on the table.

You can see the other squads taking shape and bookmark players for later consideration. The next selection therefore has a little history attached. There's your own incomplete squad, the footballers you've marked, and the visible needs of the managers around you. Reading that table is a pleasingly different use for the same eye that spots a useful signing.

Fourteen places sharpen the choice

Squad size is another substantial setting: 14, 16, 18 or 20 players. The smallest option leaves only three places beyond a starting eleven. It puts a premium on deciding what the team needs to look like while you're still drafting. Twenty gives you nine extra places, and more room to collect alternatives before settling on a shape.

The attraction here is the connection between picking and planning. A brilliant individual occupies a place that could complete another part of the side. With a small squad, that choice comes around quickly. A larger one invites a broader collection of options. The host can change how tightly everyone has to commit without changing the basic passing-set rule.

Once the football starts, Shuffle Draft uses the tactical setup and match engine familiar from Career. Our look at FM27's training and touchline tools covers the wider game's changes. Here, the squad assembled around the draft table gives those tactical decisions a very particular starting point: these are the footballers you selected while everybody else was building a rival side.

Players recover fully between matches, with injuries and fatigue cleared before the next fixture. That keeps a complete squad available for each new opponent. It also makes the draft's limited places easier to appreciate: the selection you've constructed comes back ready for another test, with the challenge concentrated on how you use its footballing strengths.

A second chance to build

Re-Drafts let the host reopen recruitment during the competition. After matchdays, players can go back into the pool or be removed from the tournament entirely, with replacements giving the squad another shape. Up to five re-drafts can be enabled; each can include as many as 20 returns or removals. The host sets those options before the event begins.

Returning a player to the pool leaves that footballer in circulation. Removing one from the tournament takes that option away. Those are different consequences for a squad change, and they give the settings genuine bite. Turning re-drafts off is also an appealing choice: everyone has to keep finding answers with the team assembled at the start.

A private group can set up a cup, a group-and-knockout competition or a league, while AI managers fill spaces and support entirely offline events. That makes it possible to explore the draft before arranging a gathering. The most inviting contest begins even earlier than kick-off, though: choose the footballer your side needs, then watch the remaining set head towards a rival.
