Leave Warframe's launcher Shader Cache enabled when using DirectX 12. Digital Extremes introduced it to retain prepared shaders and reduce loading delays and micro-stutters; it does not affect DX11. If the game hitches after an update, check the selected graphics API and this setting before deleting cache folders. A completed download-cache optimisation is a different check, and neither setting proves that every performance problem has been fixed.

Check the launcher, before pressing Play

Open Warframe's launcher and select the cog icon. Look at the Graphics API dropdown to establish whether you are using DirectX 11 or DirectX 12. Digital Extremes documents that route in its March 2026 Shadowgrapher update. If DX12 is selected, keep Shader Cache enabled. The developer's original setting announcement says it stores shaders already prepared by the game for future use, with a small increase in storage use as the trade-off.

This is a Windows PC launcher check, rather than a console or Steam Deck procedure. Record your original API and cache selection before changing anything. If Shader Cache was off under DX12, enable it, launch the game and observe whether the hitching changes. Leave your other graphics settings alone for this first comparison. Changing the API, resolution and several quality settings together makes the result harder to interpret.

Allow for rebuilding, without promising a timer

A large update can change the shader-cache format. Digital Extremes' Echoes of Duviri notes explain that rebuilding takes time as shaders are encountered, and that reaching maximum performance can therefore take more play. The same notes say this kind of rebuilding can also happen with DX11 after a large update. That is a documented explanation for some initial hitches, rather than evidence that your particular freeze has the same cause.

Compare a location's first visit with another visit under the same settings, noting whether the stutter settles or repeatedly returns. Do not attach a guaranteed number of minutes or missions to this check. PC Gamer's reporting on Nvidia's automatic shader-compilation feature likewise describes rebuilding DX12 caches after driver updates, but that is broader driver context, not a measured Warframe repair. This guide does not require installing that beta feature.

Separate file verification from shader caching

If you suspect damaged game files, Warframe Support provides a separate launcher procedure: select the gear, choose Verify and wait until it finishes, then choose Optimize. Verify compares the installed game files with the current content delivery network and replaces or repairs problematic files. Completing this process checks installation content. It does not establish that the DX12 Shader Cache setting is enabled, or that a recurring hitch has been traced to a shader.

Keep the two results separate in your notes: whether file verification completed, and what happened with the documented shader setting enabled. Avoid repeatedly clearing driver folders just because both operations use the word cache. A cache rebuild can introduce its own initial work, while a file check answers whether the installation matches the delivered content. If the same problem persists after these supported checks, repeating them indefinitely provides little new diagnostic information.

Keep a reversible comparison and report the result

Warframe Support also documents changing the graphics API in the launcher. If DX12 remains troublesome, record its settings, choose DX11 in the same launcher and compare the same situation after relaunching. This is a compatibility and behaviour comparison; it is not a promise that DX11 is faster or stutter-free. To reverse it, restore the recorded API selection and keep Shader Cache enabled when returning to DX12.

For persistent game faults, Digital Extremes directs PC bug reports to its PC Bug Forums. Include where the hitch occurs, whether it repeats on later visits, the selected API and the checks already completed. Keep any crash separate from ordinary hitching. Current updates continue to address individual performance problems, so one cache setting cannot identify every cause. Preserve the supported configuration while reporting what you observed, rather than treating a quieter session as proof of a universal fix.
