Choosing Steam for Overwatch changes the PC platform features around the game, but it does not remove the Battle.net account requirement. Steam's current listing still names that account as a prerequisite. If your reason for switching is achievements or playing through a familiar library, there is a documented benefit. If it is a promised FPS boost, the sources here do not establish one.
Choose Steam for its integration
Blizzard's Steam announcement identifies Steam achievements, the Steam friends list and inviting those friends to play in-game as features of that version. PC Gamer's 19 July 2023 reporting made the same practical distinction: Steam was adding its own integration, rather than merely supplying a shortcut. That is a useful reason to prefer it if those are the tools you already use to organise games with friends. It is a convenience decision, rather than a graphics setting.
There is also no obligation to move an existing Battle.net installation because a Steam version exists. Blizzard explicitly said existing Battle.net players could continue without changes. Our recommendation is to start with what you want the switch to accomplish. Having Overwatch alongside your other Steam games may matter to you; an extra achievement list may not. Neither preference needs a claim that one platform automatically makes your computer faster, and neither makes the other PC route obsolete.
Keep the account requirement in view
The Steam store page separates its platform features from its third-party account notice. Alongside Steam achievements and cross-platform multiplayer, it specifies a Battle.net account. A Steam sign-in is therefore not the complete account prerequisite. Blizzard's announcement explains the continuing Battle.net connection in terms of cross-platform play and other services. PC Gamer also reported that Steam and Battle.net players would be able to play together, so choosing Steam is not choosing an isolated Steam-only community.
For an existing player, our advice is to establish which Battle.net account you intend to use before treating a new installation as ready. Do not create a replacement identity just because you have changed where you launch the game. This is an account-selection check, not a promise that every missing item is fixed by signing in again. If your access or expected content is wrong, resolve that specific account problem before purchasing replacements or experimenting with disconnecting linked services.

Read subscription offers separately
Blizzard's September 2024 Game Pass article illustrates why account access and subscription extras should be checked separately. Its 17 September update distinguished permanent rewards, redeemable on Xbox or Battle.net and then available across platforms, from seasonal benefits available only on Xbox and Battle.net. It also specified Battle.net redemption for a PC subscription tier. These were the terms of that published offer, rather than proof that Steam and Battle.net were interchangeable for every subscription benefit.
That article is dated, so do not read its launch skins, currency or subscription-tier names as a new October 2026 offer. If subscription rewards determine your launcher choice, check the current offer's eligible tier, redemption platform and continuing-access conditions before subscribing or switching. Our recommendation is to distinguish something you permanently redeemed from temporary access supplied by a subscription. A successful account connection alone does not prove that a particular promotion applies to the PC version you opened.
Do not make the launcher your FPS diagnosis
This comparison contains no controlled Steam-versus-Battle.net performance test. The cited launch announcement and independent report explain integration and account access; they are not frame-time measurements. Our advice is to treat a claimed performance advantage as a separate question requiring evidence. A useful comparison would document the same computer, game build, driver, resolution, graphics settings and test scene, rather than attributing two different play sessions to the launcher name alone.
If your current installation runs reliably, decide whether the verified platform features justify changing your routine. If it does not, define the problem before choosing a remedy: failed sign-in, missing entitlement and low FPS are different outcomes. Success for a convenience switch means reaching the intended account and using the integration you wanted. It does not establish a measured rendering improvement. Keep that distinction when judging recommendations to change launcher, and when deciding whether another download is worth your time.
