To get your first Ascended hero border in Overwatch, reach Hero Level 20 on that character by playing outside Custom Games. The border applies automatically when you play them in a match. This PC guide covers that first unlock in Progression 2.0, introduced on 26 August 2025, with the faster hero levelling announced on 12 May 2026 and later patch notes reviewed through 6 October.

Level the hero whose border you want

Complete matches with your chosen hero. Blizzard defines Hero Level as the time you have spent playing that particular character. Your overall Progression Level is different: it increases whenever any of your heroes gains a level. An account total above 20 therefore does not establish that the hero you have just selected has reached the first border milestone.

For a straightforward route, choose Quick Play under Unranked and play the character you want to progress. This is a suggested eligible mode, not a requirement to enter Competitive. Blizzard's progression explanation specifically excludes Custom Games. Practising there can be useful, but it is not the documented route to this reward. Check the individual hero's level when judging whether you have reached the target.

Do not plan the grind around the old launch estimate of about 100 minutes per later level. That figure appeared in the Season 18 announcement, but the 12 May 2026 notes subsequently made all heroes faster to level. Blizzard did not give a replacement time in those notes. There is no verified number of matches or hours promised here; the hero's displayed level is the useful completion check.

Let the border apply automatically

Once that hero reaches level 20, play them in a match and look for the Ascended portrait treatment in Hero Select. You do not need to buy an Ascended border or equip it as a skin. The Season 18 announcement describes the reward as permanent. Its documented early milestones are levels 20, 40 and 60; this guide's target is the first of those, rather than a complete catalogue of later prestige designs. If another hero has no border when you select them, check that character's level separately. The first hero's unlock does not establish that the second has met the requirement.

Check the right audience before deciding the border is missing. Allies can see it in Hero Select, while enemies are initially prevented from seeing your hero information. Blizzard's explanation puts the enemy border delay at 10-15 seconds after the match begins; full player cards appear after an elimination involving those players. An opponent not seeing it immediately is therefore not evidence that you failed to unlock it.

Separate borders from the other level rewards

The small progression badge and the animated portrait border are different rewards. The August launch notes say hero and account badges prestige automatically at their own thresholds. A changing badge does not substitute for reaching Hero Level 20 on the selected character. Check the hero level and portrait treatment together, rather than using the account badge alone to judge progress.

Loot Boxes also have their own milestones. The Season 18 announcement lists a base box at level 5, Epic boxes at 25, 35 and 45, and Legendary boxes at 30, 40 and 50. Those published rewards explain why a box and a border need not arrive together. Receiving a level-5 box does not mean that your first Ascended border is due.

Returning players should not assume they must restart. Blizzard awarded the Progression 2.0 rewards retroactively for existing hero levels, and PC Gamer reported players receiving accumulated boxes and credits at launch. That was the progression update, not a new October giveaway. If the correct hero is already eligible but the portrait still seems wrong, record its level, selected mode and where you checked the display before reporting the discrepancy; no universal repair is established by these sources.
