To defend manually in EA SPORTS FC 27, switch to the player who can stop the attack before trying to win the ball. With Classic right-stick switching, flick towards that defender. Competitive gameplay gives controlled defenders more interception reach; leaving the relevant player to the AI gives up that advantage.

This guide covers the PC version with a controller and September 2026 launch gameplay. It focuses on player selection, the first part of manual defending. EA limits its reduced AI auto-tackling rules to Competitive gameplay; do not assume an Authentic Career match behaves identically.

Choose how the right stick selects a defender

Open Settings, then Game Settings. In Gameplay, find Switching and check Right Stick Switching. Choose Classic for immediate selection; the alternatives below change how you complete a switch.

Right Stick SwitchingWhat to do
ClassicFlick towards the next nearest player in that direction.
AdaptiveHold towards a player; a longer hold selects someone farther away.
Player RotationMove the next-player indicator with the stick, then use the left shoulder button to switch.

Check Right Stick Switching Reference: Player Relative measures direction from your controlled player, while Ball Relative uses the ball. Aim from the selected reference towards your target.

FC 27 Game Settings shows Right Stick Switching set to Classic and its reference set to Player Relative.

Take control before the attacker reaches you

Choose the defender positioned to contest the next pass or dribble, then move them into the attack's path. This is a practical use of EA's documented interception advantage, rather than a guarantee of possession. When the opponent changes direction, reassess who can deal with the new threat instead of staying with a player the ball has already passed.

Once selected, jockey to track the dribbler and choose when to make a standing tackle. EA says controlled players have faster jockey movement and greater manual standing-tackle reach than in FC 26. Teammate Contain now keeps an AI teammate farther from the ball carrier; switch to that teammate yourself when you want them to close down more closely.

Check the switch before changing more settings

Try a defensive passage and watch which player responds after a flick. Recheck the reference if direction feels wrong, or Player Rotation's confirmation if only the indicator moves.

T3's launch-week PS5 Pro report independently describes the stronger jockey movement and interception reach when controlling defenders. That supports the gameplay change, but it is not a test of your PC setup. Learn the selection and positioning first; faster movement cannot choose the right defender for you.
