Ace Combat 8 keeps online progressseparate from its campaign

A fighter jet streaks through a bank of cloud, while the pilot carrying the name Wings of Theve is still learning what that name means. Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve has two quite different invitations: a single-player war story in Strangereal and a separate online career as a mercenary. Bandai Namco has now described both in enough detail to show where your time will go. If you mainly want the campaign, you can see what the online systems add without mistaking them for part of its progression.

A borrowed name in an occupied country

The Federation of Central Usea has been occupied by Sotoa, and its famous ace is dead. You play REX, an unknown pilot who takes the Wings of Theve identity after that crash. Bandai Namco says the campaign follows REX and the three allied pilots of Joker Flight as they fight to reclaim their country. Between missions, first-person scenes bring the pilot out of the cockpit and into conversations with squadmates. That is a more specific premise than simply becoming an unbeatable ace: REX inherits a reputation before earning one.

The flying remains arcade-style combat rather than a demand for simulator expertise. PC Gamer played several campaign missions and described familiar, approachable controls alongside heavier-feeling slow aircraft, strong sound at high speed and aircraft-specific layouts for upgrades. Its account is a hands-on impression of an unfinished slice, not a verdict on the full campaign. One mission it reported involved defending an outpost from bombers while squadmates' personalities emerged over the radio. That combination of readable action and heightened war drama is a useful guide to the game's tone.

An online career with its own hangar

Ace Combat Online starts from an Air Base that Bandai Namco says can host up to 100 players. It has separate save data and progression from the campaign. Both modes share an aircraft roster, but online pilots acquire their planes through mercenary rewards rather than bringing over a finished story collection. That distinction is practical if you plan to play with friends: buying and upgrading a plane for REX will not automatically equip your online pilot. The publisher has detailed the split; how quickly the online hangar grows remains to be seen.

Two main online mission types use teams of four. Co-Op Assault pits teams against computer-controlled enemies in a score contest; Co-Op Warfare puts the teams against each other amid computer-controlled land, sea and air units. Warfare's Threat Level rewards a streak of successful attacks with more points, while also making your destruction more valuable to opponents. There are also timed Scramble missions for four pilots and Emergency Sorties for up to eight against series superweapons. It is a broader offer than a simple dogfight lobby, though match quality and long-term balance cannot be judged from a mode list.

What the extra spending buys

Online play has a regular Ace Pass and a paid Premium Ace Pass, with rewards planned to refresh every two months. Bandai Namco lists cosmetics, upgrade items and aircraft among the premium rewards. The publisher says there are no paid loot boxes or purchasable consumables, and that pass aircraft are planned for separate sale after their season ends. Those details make the spending model clearer, but they do not establish how the paid rewards will affect competition until players can see the full progression in use.

The European launch is set for 2 October on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S; some deluxe preorders grant access from 29 September. The standard game contains the campaign and online mode, while the Deluxe Edition adds early access, cosmetics and a premium pass voucher. Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War is a preorder bonus, not part of Ace Combat 8's campaign. For a newcomer, the clearer buying decision is whether you want this story of a pilot assuming a fallen ace's name, an independent online career, or both. The known details support either reason to look closer.
