You can play Nintendo Switch Sports Resort with up to four people on one Switch 2, or gather up to eight in an online Friend Lobby with two players per console. For online play, you need a Nintendo Account, internet access and a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership. This covers the 22 October 2026 launch; pre-launch details may change at release.
Choose a sport for your group
Count the people playing before choosing your sport. Boxing and Thumb Wrestling accommodate two locally; the other ten sports accommodate up to four. Use TV or tabletop mode for your same-system session. Have a compatible controller for each player, wear wrist straps and leave room for everyone to move. Check our Joy-Con compatibility and pairing instructions when reusing older controllers.
For online sessions, use the sport's own limit below. Bowling reaches 16 and Golf reaches eight, while Table Tennis remains a two-player activity. The online maximum for an individual sport is separate from Friend Lobby's eight-person total. Choose a sport that fits the people taking part in that activity.
| Sport | Local maximum | Online maximum |
|---|---|---|
| Boxing | 2 | 2 |
| Table Tennis | 4 | 2 |
| Archery | 4 | 4 |
| Tennis | 4 | 4 |
| Volleyball | 4 | 4 |
| Bowling | 4 | 16 |
| Basketball | 4 | 4 |
| Golf | 4 | 8 |
| Thumb Wrestling | 2 | 2 |
| Skateboarding | 4 | 4 |
| Power Cruising | 4 | 4 |
| Prop Plane | 4 | 4 |
Use Friend Lobby for online Skateboarding, Power Cruising and Prop Plane: those three activities are available online through that mode only. For a private group of eight, plan around at least four consoles because each system contributes up to two players. The sport you choose still determines how many can take part.
Choose private, casual or ranked play
Use Friend Lobby to host or join a private session. Choose Casual Online Play for worldwide matches without recorded wins and losses, or Pro League for ranked competition against players at a similar level. Pro League starts you at E; winning moves you up. Casual Online Play offers nine sports.

Arrange Nintendo Switch Online access before your online session. You also need a Nintendo Account and an internet connection; online services are available only in supported countries. For a group sharing one console in the same room, use the offline option and its local player limits instead.
GameChat also requires internet access, Nintendo Switch Online and a Nintendo Account. Add a compatible USB camera if you want video features. Keep that camera purchase separate from the controllers needed to play your chosen sport.
