Sony has brought AI upscaling to the standard PS5 through QSSR, with Marvel's Wolverine and Ghost of Yotei receiving support in game patches on 1 October. The new graphics option is implemented by each game: Sony's announcement does not offer a system-wide switch that upgrades the rest of a player's library.

Quick Spectral Super Resolution is a lighter relative of PSSR, the upscaler used on PS5 Pro. Sony says a streamlined neural network and an implementation tuned for the standard console make it possible to improve image detail and stability on that hardware. Both technologies come from Project Amethyst, Sony's AI graphics collaboration with AMD; PSSR remains its higher-end PS5 Pro option.

Wolverine enables it by default

Insomniac's notes for Wolverine version 1.002.000 explicitly say QSSR is on by default on PS5. That is a useful detail for owners returning after the patch: they do not necessarily need to find and enable it themselves. The notes also list fixes for progression, crashes and accessibility tools, but those are separate from the new image-reconstruction feature.

Everyeye recorded its own Wolverine comparison using sequences with QSSR and the previous upscaling method. Its 2 October report describes a cleaner picture with fewer reconstruction artefacts, particularly when examining enlarged details, while judging the overall difference between the options relatively modest. Those observations concern Wolverine; they do not establish the size of the improvement in every game that adopts QSSR.

Hardware Busters explains the technical constraint: the standard PS5 runs the neural network on graphics resources also used to render the game, whereas PS5 Pro has dedicated acceleration. QSSR therefore has a processing cost. Sony's announcement supplies no frame-time measurements or frame-rate comparison, so its promised image improvements should not be read as a guarantee of faster performance.

Further games need developer support

Sony says it will make QSSR broadly available to PlayStation developers. Its announcement names Wolverine and Ghost of Yotei as the first supported games, without identifying further titles or a timetable for them. Making the library available gives studios a new rendering option; players still need a game update that actually implements it.
