Install the 9 October 2026 update for Order of the Sinking Star if you are running into Steam compatibility trouble at launch. The developer has reduced the Steam SDK requirement to address reported incompatibilities: the updated game requires SteamClient021, or Proton v9 and above. This guide covers the Steam release launched on 8 October, with the patch notes checked on 10 October.
Finish the game update before retrying
On the desktop Steam client, open the Downloads link at the bottom of the window, or choose View > Downloads. Valve's Download Manager shows queued updates, their progress and completed downloads. Find Order of the Sinking Star and let its available update finish. A scheduled entry is not a completed installation, even if you bought and downloaded the game on launch day.
Valve says launching a game forces its update immediately, and the Download Manager can override an automatic-update schedule. Use that supported route if Steam has placed the download later in the queue. Once installation has finished, retry the game and check whether the original Steam error still appears. Reaching play is the practical result you are checking; the notes give no separate in-game patch-number display to inspect.

Read the Proton requirement as a minimum
If you run the Windows game through Proton, the developer's new floor is v9 or above. SteamClient021 is the other requirement named in the same patch note, not a downloadable fix that players are told to install separately. The SDK downgrade happens in the game update. The note does not prescribe Proton Experimental, a custom compatibility tool or a replacement Steam DLL.
Keep the scope narrow when judging the result. This is a documented compatibility change, not a diagnosis of every crash or black screen. Gematsu independently confirms the 8 October Steam release, but its announcement predates this patch and does not test the repair. The requirement and reason for changing it come from the developer's newer notes.
Separate a failed download from a remaining game fault
If Steam displays an update or installation error, Valve says the reason appears in parentheses at the end of the message. Its basic troubleshooting starts with restarting Steam and the computer. That is a launcher-installation check, rather than another Sinking Star compatibility patch. Keep the exact message so you can distinguish a download that never finished from the updated game still failing to start.
For a continuing game fault after the update, the official launch announcement links the game's Discord for help and feedback. Describe your platform, the error text, whether the update completed and, if relevant, the Proton version in use. Include what changed when you retried. Those details make the remaining problem identifiable without assuming it shares the cause addressed on 9 October.
