PlayStation is replacing its current PS5 headset line with the PlayStation Pulse and Pulse Edge wireless headsets. The standard Pulse is due in select markets this holiday season, while Pulse Edge is planned for early 2027. Sony has not announced a price, a precise release date or the markets that will receive either model, so the announcement gives prospective buyers a feature split rather than enough information to choose one.

Two headsets, different PS5 controls

Both new models use PlayStation Link through a supplied USB-C adapter, which Sony says provides lossless, low-latency audio on compatible devices. They can also maintain a simultaneous Bluetooth connection, and both use larger planar magnetic drivers and integrated microphones with AI-enhanced noise rejection. On PS5, PlayStation Link is the relevant route for wireless game audio; the broader PC, Mac and PlayStation Portal compatibility does not make the headsets a new console feature on those devices. Both will be sold in White and Midnight Black, and their earcups rotate flat for carrying.

The distinction starts with the drivers and expands into controls. Pulse has four magnets per driver and an integrated microphone. Pulse Edge has eight magnets per driver, a detachable boom microphone, active noise cancellation, a carrying case and a 3.5mm audio and microphone jack. It is also the only one with a dedicated PS5 game-audio and chat-balance control. Sony says the higher magnet count is intended to deliver fuller bass while retaining detail, but the company has not supplied independent listening tests, battery figures or a comparison with the outgoing Pulse Elite.

Availability is still the missing part

The two launch windows matter more than the shared name. Sony says PlayStation Pulse will arrive in select markets during the 2026 holiday season, whereas Pulse Edge will not launch until early 2027. There is no pre-order date, UK price, launch-day market list or exact calendar date for either headset. That leaves no basis for treating the standard model as a lower-priced purchase, or for assuming that every current Pulse Elite owner needs an upgrade. TechRadar likewise notes that Sony has not given either model a price.

For PS5 players deciding whether to wait, the confirmed choice is practical rather than technical: Pulse is the earlier model with the shared wireless connection and noise-rejecting microphone, while Pulse Edge adds the console-specific chat balance control, active noise cancellation and a detachable boom microphone. The rest remains prospective. Sony has described its audio goals and feature list, but it has not announced retail terms or published a full specification sheet. Buyers should wait for the local price and date before comparing either headset with existing PlayStation Link or third-party options.
