To edit a finished player-built boat in Rust, use the steering wheel's Deploy & Edit option with a Boat Building Station in your inventory. In the Deep Sea, take the boat to an island's fixed Boat Building Station instead: the portable route does not work there.

This guide covers the Steam PC game's Livestock Update, released on 1 October 2026, using the boat-editing rules introduced with Naval Update on 5 February and revised by Shipshape on 5 March. It applies to modular player-built boats, not a purchased rowboat, RHIB or Rust Console Edition.

Bring the station and tools for your changes

For the steering-wheel route, carry the Boat Building Station item yourself. Facepunch's implementation notes describe Deploy & Edit taking that item, placing the station around the existing boat and entering edit mode. Having a station somewhere else on the shore is not the same prerequisite. Keep the Boat Building Plan available if you intend to add boat-specific blocks, plus the materials or deployables for those changes.

Choose somewhere with room to work and stop the boat before opening the editing option. The developer's deployment work also restricts editing in unbuildable areas and while the boat is moving too fast. There is no verified universal distance or speed threshold in the public instructions, so use the game's feedback rather than a guessed number.

Choose Deploy & Edit at the steering wheel

Return to the steering wheel and select Deploy & Edit from its interaction options. The station should be deployed around your existing boat and the boat should enter edit mode. This is the route for changing a vessel you have already finished; you do not need to start a replacement boat just because you launched the first one.

Use the Boat Building Plan for additional boat blocks. Shipshape removed the usual five-minute restriction on rotating and demolishing those blocks while in edit mode. An old placement is therefore not, by itself, a reason to abandon the design. That permission applies inside edit mode; it is not a promise that every object on a sailing boat can be removed at any moment.

Read the location error before retrying

If Deploy & Edit appears but refuses to work, read the on-screen error. Since Shipshape, the steering-wheel option remains visible even when the location is unsuitable, with a toast explaining that editing is unavailable there. A visible option therefore does not confirm that your current position is valid.

Check the carried station first, then the boat's movement and location. Move to an appropriate building area before trying again. If you are in the Deep Sea, changing your position within open water will not remove that route's regional restriction: use an island station as described below. Rustafied's February launch report also confirms the carried-station requirement.

Dock at an island station in the Deep Sea

Look for the fixed Boat Building Station at a Deep Sea island. Shipshape added one to every island specifically for repairs and modifications at sea. Bring the boat nearby and power it down. These stations exert a small magnetic pull on a nearby, powered-down vessel to help it dock.

Use that station's editing facilities once docked, rather than trying to deploy your portable station through the wheel. February's restriction describes the portable method; March supplied a separate island facility. Rustafied's March update report also records those island stations. It does not describe unrestricted building throughout the region.

Finish the edit and check the result

After making the changes, use the steering wheel to finish building again. For the portable Deploy & Edit route, Facepunch documents the temporary station being removed and its item returned to the player. Confirm the new blocks or equipment remain on the boat and that it has left edit mode before setting off.

If the expected edit still fails on a current server, record the exact error and whether you used the portable or island route. Those details distinguish a missing prerequisite from a station or server problem; this documented procedure does not establish a fix for every boat bug.
