Lu Bu is waiting inDynasty Warriors 3's free demo

Dynasty Warriors 3: Complete Edition Remastered has a free demo available now, one week before the full game launches on 1 October. It is a deliberately narrow sample: six officers, one wintry version of the Battle of Hulao Gate and a familiar monster of a bonus fight after Dong Zhuo. Koei Tecmo has put Lu Bu at the far end of the trial, but reaching him before the clock expires may be the harder part.

Six officers walk into Hulao Gate

The demo lets players choose Zhao Yun, Guan Yu, Xiahou Dun, Zhen Ji, Zhou Yu or Sun Shangxiang. Steam's listing says difficulty can be changed and warns that parts of this sample may differ from the finished release. It is free on Steam, with free PS5 and Xbox Series versions also listed by their platform stores; Koei Tecmo announced the same demo for Switch 2. Progress is not the point here. This is a contained battle intended to show how a 2001 favourite feels after its action and presentation have been rebuilt.

Respec's Kite Stenbuck played the closely related Tokyo Game Show build and found some of the old danger intact. Enemy archers overwhelmed Guan Yu quickly enough to force a retreat towards a recovery bun, even though producer Tomohiko Sho told the outlet that the demo used the more approachable Normal settings. Classic settings are designed to sit closer to the original balance. That makes the difficulty option more revealing than a routine menu toggle: newcomers can try the new shape of the battle, while returning players can ask for sharper arrows.

Lu Bu turns the last minutes into a chase

Hulao Gate does not simply end when Dong Zhuo falls. In Respec's play-through, Lu Bu appeared afterwards as a bonus boss, leaving whatever time remained to deal with him. Optional routes had already consumed enough of the session that Stenbuck could not finish the fight. That is a smart stage for a demo because its pressure is easy to understand without a tutorial essay: clear too widely and the most famous opponent may arrive when the clock is already against you.

The remaster does not leave players with only 2001 tools. Respec reports a sidestep evasion, a timed parry and revised horse riding carried over from Dynasty Warriors: Origins. Evasion can also cancel the recovery after a charge attack, opening a quicker route into another string. Those additions should make the crowd easier to negotiate, but the archers and final timer stop the sample becoming a victory lap. It is a test of whether modern movement can live alongside the old game's willingness to punish careless positioning.

The full release combines Dynasty Warriors 3 with its Xtreme Legends expansion, more than 40 officers, extra stories for seven of them, bodyguard customisation and four challenge modes. That is a much larger package than this single battle can demonstrate. Hulao Gate instead gives the remaster a focused audition: choose an officer, find out how much danger to invite, and decide whether chasing Lu Bu is worth the seconds it costs.
