Xbox has opened disc-to-digital licensing to all players, allowing supported Xbox One and Xbox Series X discs to grant digital access without staying in the drive. The licence remains tied to possession of the disc: selling, giving away or losing it can cost you that access.
Microsoft announced the wider availability on 29 September, following the Insider test it unveiled in August. Tom's Hardware reported the public rollout on 30 September and highlighted the ownership condition. For someone with a shelf of eligible games, the change means they can claim digital licences and play without swapping discs, while keeping the physical copies they need to retain those benefits.
Claiming a licence still needs a disc drive
Microsoft's current support page says playing a supported disc while signed in grants a digital licence, with a notification confirming the claim. Any Xbox console with an optical drive can claim supported Xbox One and Series X discs. That includes claiming a Series X disc on an Xbox One, although the claim itself does not make a Series X game playable on the older hardware.
There is also a manual route for working through several discs without waiting for each game to install. With automatic disc playback switched off, owners can insert a disc, open its Home-screen menu and select Get digital license, then Claim. Claimed games appear in Full library, under All games, with a disc-to-digital badge. The original disc remains usable after the licence has been claimed.
Eligibility and ownership still limit access
The scheme covers eligible Xbox One and Xbox Series X discs, not original Xbox or Xbox 360 discs. Microsoft says eligibility can change because of technical, licensing, publishing, manufacturing and other factors. For multi-disc games, the claim uses disc one. Content supplied through a separate redemption code is governed by that code's terms, so a box labelled Ultimate Edition does not guarantee every extra comes with the disc licence.
Play Anywhere provides a further benefit for qualifying titles: after claiming the disc licence, owners can find and install the supported PC version through My Library in the Xbox app on PCs and handhelds. Microsoft's original announcement also lists cloud gaming where supported. Neither benefit applies automatically to every eligible disc, and a digital licence does not remove a game's required peripherals or their device compatibility limits.
If access to a disc licence is lost, Microsoft's support page says the owner must regain the disc and play it while signed in, or buy a digital version from the Microsoft Store. The company warns that access may be limited or revoked when the qualifying disc is no longer in the player's possession.
