Valve's 9 September Steam client beta changes the way Big Picture fills a display. The new Big Art Mode places the selected game's library artwork behind the home screen and moves the recently played-games carousel lower, while a new screensaver setting can rotate game art and recent in-game screenshots. The changes are available only to Steam Client Beta participants for now, so they are not a confirmed stable-client update.
The patch notes say Big Art Mode is enabled from Big Picture's Home settings. It keeps the old home-screen material available further down the page, rather than replacing the library or its shortcuts. Valve has also added a Personal Calendar to the Recommended tab. For players using a TV, a handheld dock or a controller-first PC setup, the practical change is visual: the highlighted game gets more room, while the familiar row of recent titles remains in view.
The new screensaver lives in Big Picture's Customisation settings. Valve has supplied two options: a configurable slideshow drawing on recently played games and screenshots, and a retro-style bouncing Steam logo. The beta can also load custom screensavers, although Valve's announcement does not say when that support will reach the public Steam client. The accompanying official images show the feature inside Big Picture rather than as a Steam Deck-only addition, so desktop PCs using the controller-focused interface are covered too.
There are PC-facing fixes beyond the interface work. Valve says the beta reduces the performance impact of Game Recording for some Direct3D 12 games on Windows, fixes some D3D11 and D3D12 overlay screenshot hitches, and improves Steam Client startup performance. Those are targeted fixes, not a performance claim for every game or recording configuration. The patch also addresses a case in which users could fail to reconnect automatically after Steam server maintenance.
Linux users receive several distinct changes: Valve says downloads should improve on high-latency connections, the compatibility-tool selector is now always visible, and SteamOS compatibility warnings will appear in desktop UI when appropriate. On desktop Linux, Steam will also show the SteamOS unsupported dialog for games known not to work through Proton. PC Gamer's report of the beta notes that Big Picture and Steam Deck users are the clearest audience for the new presentation options, but the release notes make the Windows and Linux scope explicit. Valve has not announced a date for moving this beta build to the stable channel.
