Nintendo Switch 2 now supports variable refresh rate, or VRR, in TV mode through system update 23.0.0. The feature is conditional rather than a blanket performance switch: Nintendo says the game and television must both support VRR, and the Switch 2 dock needs its own update before the option can be enabled. That gives docked players a new display setting to check, but it does not add VRR to every game or turn an incompatible television into a compatible one.

VRR changes the refresh rate sent to a display so that it can follow a game's processing speed. Nintendo's European support notes say the output rate will match the software's performance only when the software and television support the feature. The company has added VRR settings under Display in System Settings, alongside renamed video-output information. This is useful where the whole chain is compatible, but Nintendo's wording leaves the game's own support as a necessary condition. A compatible TV alone is not enough.

The practical setup starts with the console update and a separate dock update. Nintendo says the dock update is required to enable VRR, while its support page says Switch 2 normally downloads the latest system software when connected to the internet and also offers a manual update through System Settings. Players using several televisions can also keep audio settings separately for each connected TV under this release. That is a convenience change, not a sign that every display will receive the new refresh-rate option.

There is one confirmed way to see the feature in Nintendo software immediately. Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour version 1.1.0 makes its VRR Slider tech demo playable in TV mode. Nintendo Life reports that the demo still requires a VRR-compatible screen and a dock update, which gives the system setting a defined demonstration rather than a published list of broadly compatible games. Players should therefore treat the update as the start of docked VRR support, not as confirmation of performance changes for a particular release.

Version 23.0.0 also adds full system transfer between two Switch 2 consoles, a Virtual Game Cards settings option and several GameChat, accessibility, audio and Mii changes. VGC reports that the new transfer can move data including saves and screenshots to another Switch 2, while Nintendo's notes confirm the new Switch 2-to-Switch 2 transfer route. Those additions do not alter the VRR conditions: for TV-mode refresh-rate matching, the deciding details remain the game, the television and the updated dock.
