The sun catches the water beneath a flying happy ghast in Mojang's Switch 2 screenshots. That is the most obvious change in Minecraft for Nintendo Switch 2: Vibrant Visuals will be on by default when the native version arrives on 27 October. The blocks and the things you do with them remain familiar. This release is chiefly about how a world looks on Nintendo's newer hardware, and what existing Switch owners will have to do to move across.
Vibrant Visuals adds directional light, moving shadows, reflections and volumetric fog. Mojang introduced the graphics mode on other supported devices in 2025; Switch 2 is getting it with a version built for the console. You can still choose how to spend a Minecraft day, from building freely in Creative to gathering resources and surviving enemies. Mojang's launch announcements describe no Switch 2-only adventure or new rules for those modes. That is useful to know if the name on the box sounds like a new game.
The brighter Overworld has limits
Mojang says supported Marketplace content can use Vibrant Visuals, and the Nintendo-exclusive Super Mario Mash-Up pack is being refreshed for the new look. Its Mario-themed world includes Peach's castle and Delfino Plaza, with textures, music and character skins. This is a particularly clear place to look for the visual difference: familiar buildings can gain the new lighting without the pack becoming a separate sequel. The announcement does not describe new Mario quests or a changed layout, so a graphical update is the supported expectation.

The visual setting has exceptions. Mojang says Vibrant Visuals will not be available during split-screen play or with some Marketplace worlds and content. If your favourite way to play is sharing a television with someone beside you, the headline graphical feature will not accompany that session. The company has confirmed a digital upgrade path for owners of Minecraft on the original Switch, but says its details will follow. It has not yet said whether that move is free or what the eligibility conditions are.
What an early build can tell us
German outlet NintendoFans.de played a pre-release Switch 2 build at gamescom and found the graphics noticeably improved against the original Switch version. Its hands-on account also reports repeated stutters in that build. That is an observation about the version the outlet played, not a measured frame-rate result for the finished release. The outlet saw no major new mechanics or extra content in its session, which fits Mojang's emphasis on presentation rather than a redesigned game.
That leaves a straightforward choice for newcomers and a less settled one for current owners. If you want to start Minecraft on Switch 2, the confirmed attraction is its native release with Vibrant Visuals, including the Mario pack's updated appearance. If you already own the Switch game, there is no reason yet to assume a free upgrade or buy it again on the strength of an unspecified path. The graphics are easy to see; the practical cost of moving your existing copy still needs an answer from Mojang.
